Wine Up: A wine tweet-up for Team Up!

Written by: Kristen Winn @girluniverse

Having worked in the Washington wine industry for 13 years and being heavily involved with Team Up for nearly a year, I wanted to blend my two loves and connect these communities. The modern way to get strangers in a room and talk to each other? A tweet up, naturally!

As the Washington wine industry continues its rapid growth (2nd only to California for largest producer), unless you quit your day job it’s just about impossible to keep up with what’s out there. So why not get a leg up and taste multiple wines in an evening AND have an expert educate you about them? Join us for our first #wineup Thursday, Oct 27 @ 630pm at Wine World!

Bring a few friends and –

Tweet the night away about who not only likes Riesling, but also learns that the organic Riesling from Snoqualmie will rock everyone’s socks at Thanksgiving dinner.
Snap a photo on your new iPhone4 and compare whose teeth and tongue are evidence to having sampled Stained Tooth Syrah from Dusted Valley Vintners.
Tour the Northwest’s largest wine store, Wine World, with over 6,000 wines from around the world.

There will be eight wineries pouring from 6:30-8:30 for a suggested donation of $10/person, not to mention a chance to win a few prizes, such as two tickets to 20something in November!

For more information, invite friends or RSVP, visit our Facebook page!
Twitter accts & hashtags:  #wineup #20wine @20somethingwine @WineWorldSea @TeamUp4NonProf

A BIG thank you to Wine World for providing a venue and special thanks to 20something – the new vintage for partnering with us!

I would also like to thank the following wineries for taking the time from harvest to pour!

We look forward to mingling with you on October 27th! Cheers!

September is 2012 Nonprofit Application Month at Team Up

One of the very important processes for us is the selection of which nonprofits we are going to partner with each year.  For 2012 we are going to change things up a bit.

Previously our Nonprofit Committee has diligently selected the nonprofits in order for us to ensure that we work with as wider range of nonprofits in terms of both service area and size as possible, and we have done so in 6 month increments.  This year, here is what we are changing…

    • We will be accepting applications from nonprofits from now until the end of September for all of the 2012 calendar year.
    • We will vet applicants and create a list of nonprofits we would be happy to work with and then we are going to approach bands to select the nonprofits who they would like to play for from that list.

It is our hope that by adopting this process we can better marry motivated bands to great causes to deliver more results than ever next year.  If you are a nonprofit who is interested in partnering with Team Up I urge you to click here and complete this brief questionnaire and apply for inclusion on our 2012 list.

To date, Team Up has produced Gigs4Good benefits for the following nonprofits…

If you know of a nonprofit that you think would be a good fit for us please share this information with them as soon as possible so they have time to prepare and apply before September 30th. Thank you!

My Doe Bay, Doe Bay!

This post is also posted on Ryan’s personal blog which you can visit at www.ryanintheus.com

I think if you died and went to Seattle’s music heaven, you might find that it is called Doe Bay. Well, at least that’s how I felt as I stepped onto the ferry to return from Orcas Island on Sunday afternoon. I had just had an experience that felt so great that it’s taken two weeks for me to even sit down and attempt to describe it for fear of completely over-romanticizing it. I’m afraid that the fact is, you are still going to think I’m talking this up more than I should and that it just couldn’t be THAT good. It was, and to say that I’m grateful to get a last minute ticket is an understatement. As I couldn’t get my family tickets, I primed myself for two big days, Friday and Saturday, in order to be home Sunday night to spend time with them…

What made Doe Bay Fest so great? The people, the music and the place…

Damien Jurado crowd

The People… My Doe Bay experience started on Thursday night – not at the Conor Byrne Open Mic at Doe Bay hosted by Mr Tony Kevin Jr. like most people, but at 3am with Aubrey, Matt and Katrina from The Local Strangers who had just played Team Up‘s Gigs4Good for PAWS. These very kind people allowed me to ride with them to catch the ferry leaving Anacortes at 6am. Thankfully as all three are singers and I didn’t want to embarrass myself, we slept instead of sang our way there… From the moment we arrived the vibe was one of inclusion, open-hearted friendliness, trust and equality. Time and time again I was introduced to smiling faces and great conversations.

What really struck me was that I could leave my $1200 camera on the rug if I wanted to go up to the stage and dance, or the girls could leave their bags and there was never an issue that I witnessed. Nor was there a hint of aggression. It was simply good people, sharing a beautiful space, respecting each others property and having fun. Sound like the way we should live all the time? Does to me! I have to say that there is no way this vibe or energy would stay in tact at a similar festival in Australia. That may be due to the macho Aussie male, but at some point there are always fights and things stolen. I was deeply impressed by the people at this festival and I’ve taken away a real respect for this area and it’s people because of it.

More awesome

The Music… Well, it was a privilege to enjoy some of the areas finest musicians in a setting that seemed to inspire them to greater heights. It was also a privilege as an audience member to see how often a band was joined onstage by other bands, or to see bands in the audience offering loads of support. There is a wonderful brotherhood being cultivated in this area between bands and I believe it will result in rapid growth and success for the scene here in general. I feel like some of the bands that will drive that growth really delivered incredible sets at Doe Bay and I can’t wait to see them again. For me the standout bands were Pickwick, Campfire OK, Lemolo, Kelli Schaefer, and of course, the band that is already enjoying ever-increasing success, The Head and the Heart. I will write separate blog posts about a couple of those bands and their performances in the coming days.

I didn’t get to see everything I would have liked to have seen, but I could not be more grateful about seeing a set than the midnight acoustic, double act delivered by Damien Jurado and John Vanderslice (who was joined by Dianna Potter). I have tremendous respect for Damien. As a newcomer to the Seattle scene, I see him as a wonderfully vulnerable, immensely talented artist who I could watch live or listen to on my iPod with equal measures of enjoyment. Having never heard John play until earlier that day (which I really enjoyed) I, along with the small crowd sitting and listening quietly under the stars, witnessed a master entertainer at work. John just makes you want to be his friend by being so wonderfully humble and gracious. Together, these two great artists performing in this intimate setting, were the highlight of my Doe Bay.

Beautiful Doe Bay

The Place… It was my first time to Orcas Island. In fact, it was my first time to the San Juan’s at all so you can imagine how I felt when I saw glimpses of forest clad islands as the ferry navigated through the fog in the early hours of Friday morning. The fog was still in when we reached the Doe Bay Resort which gave it a magical feel with tents, domes, yurts and buildings nestled into the tree-lines on both sides of Otter Cove. It was not long before the fog lifted to reveal a stunning view that must have been amazing for the performers on the Otter Cove Stage to look at as they performed for us eager spectators. The blue sky and not-too-warm sun showcased this beautiful area perfectly and gave opportunities for photographers to find filtered light shots all weekend.

As an audience member I have to give a huge shout out to Joe (Doe Bay Resort owner) and the Artist Home team led by Chad and Kevin as the festival was really well run and I can’t wait for next year’s festival where the chants of “Doe Bay, Doe Bay!” will resume.

You can see the pics I took at Doe Bay by clicking here.

The entire day was my favorite moment… Slackfest 2011

[Written by Kristen Winn- Team Up Fundraiser Chair]

Faced with writing my first ever blog post, I found myself in a perpetual state of procrastination. At a Team Up board meeting in early July I committed to writing about my experience at Slack Fest the following week.  A month later, still no blog post and Slack Fest was likely a distant memory to most, especially with the much anticipated Doe Bay Festival on the horizon.  It was time to suck it up and write.

It all began with the massive buzz surrounding Doe Bay. Work be damned – I was bound and determined to find a way to check out what sounded very similar to my music festival experiences in Alaska.  Poised and ready to go the instant tickets went on sale, my hopes were dashed as it became apparent it wasn’t meant to be.  I thought there had to be a glitch, but no.  News spread like wildfire Doe Bay had sold out in mere minutes and reality sunk in I was not amongst to the lucky ones.   Some would say I was in denial.

Days later, a post announcing the return of Slack Fest caught my attention. What’s this? Don Slack standing on a mountain of Rainier cans, local bands the likes of The Moondoggies, The Maldives and Joseph the Giant playing on a dirt racetrack on the back of a flatbed truck, a field, a river, and camping.  There was hope of a kickin’ summer music festival after all.

My fave girls, Kim & Holli, were on board with no hesitation.  Kim and I arrived mid-afternoon ready to pour beer on behalf of Team Up for Nonprofits.  Ryan (the other Ryan) the beer guy said we could keep whatever tips we made and we agreed to donate the dollars to Team Up.  Having worked at an alehouse in Anchorage, I confidently believed I’d have this down cold. Truth be told, I was a little rusty and Kim was rustier, but we found a rhythm in no time.  Sporting cowboy hats as our only shade, we filled one red cup after another and as the beer puddle beneath our feet grew, so did the line. The hot sun was high, the sky was blue, new friends were being made, and the music had everyone tapping their feet, which later became unadulterated dancing long after the stars twinkled above us.

Closing with The Moondoggies, no time was wasted before a bonfire was raging and the musicians were joining up for spontaneous acoustic sets around the fire. Gradually I left Kim & Holli behind and made my way to the tent.  Dozing off to sleep I thought about how Slack Fest was the perfect size lending itself to a community vibe, about how NICE everyone was, and about how much fun I had.

There was a Facebook post asking what your favorite moment was at Slack Fest.  I replied the entire day was my favorite moment.  I’ll be back next year for sure!  Fingers crossed, I’ll make it to Doe Bay as well!

Team Up & Artist Home "team up" for Slack Fest 2011

After a 2 year absence, Artist Home and Team Up for Non Profits is proud to present the return of Slack Fest!

After two years of hibernation, the party of the summer has been revived by Doe Bay Fest curators Artist Home and on July 9th the man, the myth and the legend, Don Slack (KEXP), will be celebrated again.  Team Up is really excited to announce that we are co-presenting this fun event and that part of the bar sales will be coming to us, so Slack Fest is now a fundraiser for Team Up which is just another excuse for you to buy tickets and come and have a fun time!

2011′s Slack Fest Will be feature raucous sets from:

The Moondoggies

The Maldives

Whalebones

The American Girls

The Golden Blondes

My Goodness

Joseph Giant

and Jack Wilson

What started as a party at the Stanwood Hotel in 2004 has morphed into a music festival celebrating the spirit and passion Don Slack puts into every show he attends and the bands who inspire it.

One of the Pacific Northwest’s most recognizable and involved music fans for decades, Don Slack also moonlights as celebrated DJ of KEXP’s “Swingin’ Doors.” And anyone who has seen Slack in his natural habitat  in the middle of a packed crowd with wife Deb by his side and a Rainier in hand  knows he can put most 22-year-olds to shame.

Held on a racetrack on a slice of Silvana, Washington farmland nestled against the Stillaguamish River, Slack Fest features some of the Pacific Northwest’s best bands like you’ve never seen them before: playing on a dirt racetrack on the back of a flatbed truck. Slack Fest offers a laid back but loud alternative to summer festivals in the city or as 2011 performers Whalebones sing, “I’m going up the country where less is more.”

Dont dilly dally, grab your tickets now by clicking here!
